What is an End of Life Doula?
As an End of Life Doula (Death Doula) I support those who are consciously and knowingly approaching death. Typically, a person will hire a Doula after receiving a terminal diagnosis or even after entering Hospice Care. Since we are all, in fact, approaching death and we do not know when it will come, this relationship can begin anytime. There are benefits to starting early in this exploration. Often, it is through facing death that we finally become free to live our most honest lives.
Similar to a Birth Doula, an End of Life Doula helps with navigating and communicating wishes and needs within the systems of care already there - family, hospice, medical, social services, spiritual support, and legal considerations, such as medical directives. We listen and help with uniquely personal desires, such as creating legacy projects, acknowledging relationship troubles, mending communication breakdowns, and designing dying vigils.
